St. Patrick's Benevolent Society records
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of original records maintained by the St. Patrick Benevolent Society. Materials were found in the collection at the Diocese of Charleston Archives and were officially accessioned on 3 Nov. 2009. Records include two (2) bound volumes of minutes, one (1) list of officers, and one (1) copy of the 1893 revised constitution and by-laws. Loose materials found in the later volume of minutes consist of correspondence, financial reports, and a funeral announcement.

Biographical or Historical Information
The St. Patrick's Benevolent Society was founded in 1817 as a source of aid to arriving Irish immigrants, both Catholic and Protestant. Following the Civil War, the organization evolved into a mutual aid society, providing sick and funeral benefits to members and their families. Meetings were held at several locations around Charleston including the Masonic Hall at 270 King Street, Hibernian Hall at 105 Meeting Street, Byrne and Fogarty Hall at 318 King Street, Catholic Central School at 52-54 George Street, and the Irish Volunteer Hall at 12 Vanderhorst Street.
