Biographical or Historical Information

Jeremiah Joseph O’Connell, a Roman Catholic priest, was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1821.  He arrived in South Carolina in 1840 and attended the Seminary of St. John the Baptist in Charleston, South Carolina.  In 1844, O’Connell was ordained.  He served in Savannah and Macon, Georgia, from 1844-1847, and then Beaufort, South Carolina, from 1848-1849. He arrived in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1850 and remained as pastor of Saint Peter Catholic Church for 21 years.  In 1871, Father O’Connell was assigned to the missions of Western North Carolina.  In 1872, he purchased property outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, and donated the land to the College of St. Mary of Help, which later became Belmont Abbey College.  Reverend O’Connell died at Belmont Abbey College in 1894.
