Identifier: O-2010.007

Scope and Contents

This item is a 27" tall x 22" wide x 1.25" thick white marble plaque on which are inscribed the following in black lettering: C.S.A. / "FALLEN BUT NOT FORGOTTEN" / TO THE MEMORY OF / OUR HEROIC DEAD WHO FELL / IN THE SERVICE OF ARMS, / DURING THE WAR OF THE CONFEDERACY, / 1861-1865. / THEY HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT / AND MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN PEACE. / A MEMORIAL PLACED ON THIS CHURCH / BY THE PASTOR AND VESTRY, / AS A TRIBUTE OF LOVE FOR THE / SOUTHERN CAUSE. / MAY 10, 1907. / FATHER CHARLES D. WOOD, / M.J. WADE, J.J. FOGARTY, J.A. WADE The plaque was recovered from the boiler room floor of the West Ashley Chancery, 1662 Ingram Rd., on 14 December 2009. Diocesan Archives assumes that, for unknown reason(s), unknown person(s) removed the plaque at an unknown time from the wooden St. Anthony Chapel, erected in Florence, S.C., in 1901, in which Msgr. Charles D. Wood was serving as pastor in 1907. Perhaps the plaque was removed from the wooden chapel when it was razed for the 1917 dedication of the brick St. Anthony of Padua Memorial Church in Florence.
