Biographical or Historical Information

The Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy, a religious women’s community, was established in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1829 by John England, first bishop of Charleston. England called the new institute Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and patterned it after the Sisters of Charity founded by Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The community, whose mission is caring for the poor, the uneducated, and the orphaned,  has operated hospitals, a school of nursing, an orphanage, parochial schools, and outreach houses and wellness centers throughout South Carolina. In 1949, the word "charity" was added to the name.
