Biographical or Historical Information
Pope Paul VI was born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini, to Giorgio Montini and Giudetta Alghisi at Concesio (Lombardy), Italy, in 1897. He was ordained a priest in 1920. By 1954, Montini was appointed Archbishop of Milan, Italy, and in 1958 elevated to Cardinal. He was elected Pope in 1963. Pope Paul VI died in 1978. He was beatified in 2014.
