Biographical or Historical Information

The Diocese of Charleston, the episcopal see for the Roman Catholic Church in South Carolina, was established in 1820 as the sixth diocese in the country. It originally encompassed 142,000 square miles and extended over three states: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.  Today the diocese comprises the entire state of South Carolina, with the majority of administrative offices, also known collectively as the chancery, located in Charleston. The Office of the Chancery records are a collection of administrative material that accumulated in the chancery building attic over time.
