Black Catholics reference collection
Scope and Contents
This is an artificial collection consisting primarily of copied newspaper clippings, correspondence, publications, and photographs regarding black Catholics of South Carolina. Topics include the history of black Catholics in South Carolina, historically black parishes and missions, school integration, civil rights, the Hospital Workers’ Strike in Charleston, slavery, and racism. Also included is material from the archives of the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Josephite Fathers and Brothers, a religious community in Baltimore, Maryland, which serves the African American community. Among this material are photocopies of typewritten transcripts from Peter Benoit’s diary, John R. Slattery correspondence, the St. Joseph Advocate, and a catalog containing a list of material related to the Diocese of Charleston. This collection also includes photocopies of material used in a Diocese of Charleston exhibit, Black, Catholic and Proud.
