Biographical or Historical Information
The Catholic Miscellany, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Charleston, covers news relating to South Carolina's Catholic community and the universal church. It was created as the United States Catholic Miscellany, which was founded by the first bishop of Charleston, John England, in 1822. The United States Catholic Miscellany was the first national weekly Catholic newspaper in the country, and ran until the Charleston fire of 1861 destroyed the publication's offices. It was not until the 1950s that the Office of the Catholic Miscellany produced a multi-folio statewide Catholic newspaper, the Catholic Banner. By 1990, the newspaper was renamed the New Catholic Miscellany by Bishop David Thompson, and the offices were relocated back to Charleston from Columbia. The "new" was removed during the late 1990s. The mission of the newspaper is to present Gospel values and the news of the Diocese of Charleston and the worldwide Catholic community.
