Knights of Columbus Committee on War Activities collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of original documents dating to the period of the First World War (1917-1920) concerning the activities of the Knights of Columbus both on the Western Front in France and Belgium as well as immediately following the armistice in the United States. It appears that this collection was compiled and gifted to the Diocese of Charleston by one Walter Kernan. Materials in this collection include official correspondence with the Committee on War Activities, as well as meeting minutes and financial records of the administration of the Committee on War Activities. In addition, this collection includes published materials dating from the period meant to instruct Catholic chaplains stationed in Europe how as to best attend to the needs of their soldiers. The Diocese of Charleston did contribute young men to the war effort in Europe. In turn, the Diocese received assistance from the Committee on War Activities in placing young men in jobs within the state of South Carolina. In addition, there are several mentions of Charleston in the reports to the Committee on War Activities as to what job openings were available to returning Catholic soldiers.
