Monsignor Donald C. Hamburger papers
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of original and photocopied materials collected by Reverend Monsignor Donald C. Hamburger before and during his tenure as a diocesan priest. Materials were donated to the archives on three separate occasions in 1999, 2000, and 2001 (accession nos. 1999.005; 2000.048; 2001.047). Because of their shared provenance, all accessions were combined under the original accession number 1999.005. Records include original accession records, various administrative paperwork, collected prayers and writings, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, one (1) postcard collection, publications, reference materials, seminary school papers and notes, one (1) transcription of “History of Our Lady of Perpetual Help” recorded by Monsignor Hamburger in 1960, and various oversized materials. The newspaper clippings reference subjects in which Monsignor Hamburger held an interest, including but not limited to papal visits, Catholicism, homosexuality, and history. The clippings were weeded out due to the large amount of materials regarding the papal visit to the United States in 1987. Similar materials can be found in the Papal Visit Collection (2009.010). There were also entire newsprint publications saved with no notations. which were photocopied for documentation. Publications include various parish bulletins, ephemera, magazine articles, unpublished histories, and two (2) copies of Monsignor Hamburger’s The Lamb of God. Reference materials include holdings regarding Monsignor Hamburger at the University of South Carolina libraries. Oversized materials include two (2) photographs signed by Bishop Francis F. Reh and Right Reverend M. C. Murphy, and one (1) personal scrapbook compiled by Monsignor Hamburger.
