Scope and Contents

This collection contains administrative records, correspondence, and publications of diocesan administrative offices, the diocesan school board, Sacred Heart Parish, and various organizations collected by Monsignor John Manning during his role as a diocesan administrator and pastor. The diocesan administration series includes correspondence and administrative records sent from the bishop’s office to Manning while he served as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, regarding topics such as the formation of the Interracial Commission as well as instruction on church services and other liturgical matters as decided by the Liturgical Commission. Organization material includes correspondence and publications regarding various committees and organizations in which Manning participated, such as the Bishop Emmet Walsh Memorial Committee. The Diocesan School Board records contain administrative records of the school board which largely consists of material regarding the integration of schools and addressing the problem of de facto segregation in Charleston Catholic schools. The Sacred Heart parish files include correspondence to and from Manning during his tenure as pastor, such as inquiries from Manning on behalf of his parishioners.

Biographical or Historical Information

John Laurence Manning, a Roman Catholic priest and educator, was born in 1901 to Michael L. Manning and Johanna O'Connell Manning, in Charleston, South Carolina.  While living in Charleston he attended St. Patrick Parochial School and Bishop England High School.  He also attended St. Charles College in Catonsville, Maryland and North American College in Rome, Italy, where he received a Doctorate in Sacred Theology. Bishop William Russell adopted Manning into the Diocese of Charleston in 1926 and in 1927 Archbishop Giuseppe Palica ordained Manning into the priesthood in Rome, Italy. After his ordination, Manning served in Charleston, South Carolina, as assistant pastor for Sacred Heart Parish in 1927, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in 1928, and St. Patrick Catholic Church, from 1929-1933.  In 1933, Bishop Emmet Walsh appointed him chancellor of the Diocese of Charleston, a position he held until 1956.  Manning also served as a Bishop England High School faculty member from 1937-1959, and was its rector from 1947-1959. Pope Pius XII awarded Manning the ecclesiastical honor of domestic prelate in 1944, and Pope John XXIII granted him the additional honor of prothonotary apostolic in 1963. In 1957, Bishop John Russell assigned Manning the pastorate of Sacred Heart Parish and in 1966, Bishop Ernest Unterkoefler appointed him vicar general of the Diocese of Charleston.  He held both positions until his death in 1976. Monsignor John Manning is buried in St. Lawrence Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina.

Custodial History

Materials were transferred to the archives from Sacred Heart on 01 September 2009 at the request of Father Dennis B. Willey.  The records were sorted and items belonging in the parish archive were given back to Father Willey for storage at Sacred Heart. Accession # 2011.002
