Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs and negatives taken by Albert Sottile Jr., a commercial photographer, of people and places in Charleston, South Carolina. Images include weddings, funerals, sports, graduations, local businesses, buildings, organizations, schools, churches, and events. Also included is nursing school material related to Kathleen Calder Sottile, Albert’s wife, and ephemera belonging to Stella Rigby Sottile, Albert’s mother. Family and personal photographs are also included.

Biographical or Historical Information

Albert James Sottile Jr., a commercial photographer, was born in 1935 to Albert Sottile Sr. and Stella Rigby. He attended Bishop England High School and the College of Charleston. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Pope John XXIII council No. 6250 and P.N. Lynch Assembly No. 704. Albert married Kathleen Calder, a 1963 graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. Albert served as the official photographer for the Diocese of Charleston as well as the College of Charleston during the 1950s and 1960s. Albert Jr. died in 1977 and is buried in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Albert Sottile Sr. (1907-1997), a hotel proprietor, was born in Charleston, South Carolina, to Santo Sottile (1870-1931) and Anna Elizabeth Beatty (1873-1933). Albert and his wife, Stella Rigby (1909-1997), operated the Charleston Hotel located at 200 Meeting Street. It was demolished in 1960. Albert Sr. and Stella are buried in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Custodial History

Sr. Anne Francis, OLM, received a large deposit of materials from the Sottile family.  She gleaned from the deposit materials directly relevant to the OLM archives and gifted the remainder to Office of Archives. South Carolina Historical Society discovered Albert Sottile, Jr.'s negatives.  The retained approximitely 50 negatives relevant to their collection and gifted the remainder to the Office of Archives.
