Biographical or Historical Information

Augustus J. McNeal, a Roman Catholic priest, was born in Ireland in 1832.  He became an ordained priest in 1856. In 1858, Patrick Lynch, Bishop of Charleston, appointed McNeal pastor of Chester, South Carolina.  This included the missions between Columbia, South Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1865, McNeal was appointed pastor of the church in Sumter, South Carolina. Father McNeal celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination in 1906. The celebration took place in the St. Joseph’s Academy chapel in Sumter.  As an honor of the occasion, he was invested as a domestic prelate by Bishop Henry P. Northrop.  Shortly after his investiture, Monsignor McNeal retired. He spent his last days at St. Francis Xavier Infirmary in Charleston, where he died in 1910.
