Biographical or Historical Information
Every year, the Office of the Bishop for the Diocese of Charleston completes a general statistical questionnaire provided by the Holy See. The report is sent to the Secretariat of the State and includes information such as Catholic population, the number of Catholic baptisms and marriages performed each year, the number of priests incardinated into the diocese, and other data regarding Catholics in South Carolina. Every five years, the bishop of Charleston reports the state of the diocese to the Holy See with a quinquennial report as required by canon law. The exception to this being if the year determined for submitting a report falls within the first two years of a bishop’s governance of the diocese, then the bishop may refrain from submitting his report on this occasion.
