Scope and Contents

This collection contains Father Francis A. Friend's manuscripts from the Second Vatican Council where he served as secretery to Bishop Francis F. Reh and usher for the Council.  Materials include original workbooks, notes, typed manuscripts, newspaper clippings, speeches, press releases, copies of Council Digest, committee lists, and correspondence from the various meetings Father Friend and Bishop Reh attended from 1962 - 1964.

Biographical or Historical Information

Francis A. Friend, son of Frederick Friend and Irene Brasda Friend, was born on 27 February 1932 in Anderson, South Carolina. He was the first member of St. Joseph Parish, Anderson, to be ordained to the priesthoood. After graduating from Anderson Boys High School in 1950, Father Friend attended St. Bernard College in Alabama and transfered to St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1953 he attended Pontificial North American College in Rome and was awarded a PhB from the Gregorian University. He also recieved a Baccalaureate of Sacred Theology in 1957 and the Licientiate of Sacred Theological from the Gregorian University in 1959. Father Friend was ordained into the priesthood on 20 December 1958 by Bishop Martin J. O'Connor in Rome. He served as Assistant at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston, 1959-1962; Tribunal Notary, 1959-1962; Vice Chancellor, 1962-1963. He returned to Rome in 1963 as secretery to Bishop Francis Reh and served as usher for the Second Vatican Council. After recieving his licentiate degree in Canon Law in 1965, Father Friend returened to Charleston and again became Vice Chancellor at the Dicoese of Charleston. He was appointed Chancellor in 1966 and served until his death on 20 October 1969.
