Scope and Contents
This collection consists of roughly 364 slide photographs taken by Rev. Msgr. Donald C. Hamburger in the late 1950s and early 1960s, gifted by Carl F. Sloan on 20 May 2005. Images document property, parishioners, clergy, and events of the Diocese as well as various locations around Charleston including Hampton Park, the battery, and Hibernian Hall. They comprise a record of Diocesan history and of Msgr. Hamburger's vocation and clerical work in the late 1950s.

Biographical or Historical Information
Donald C. Hamburger, a Roman Catholic priest, was born on June 28, 1918, in Celina, Ohio, to August Francis Hamburger and Estella Bernard Hamburger. He attended St. Gregory Minor Seminary and St. Mary’s Seminary in Ohio and was ordained into priesthood on July 14, 1946, by Bishop Emmet M. Walsh. He served as faculty member of Bishop England High School; served in residence at Our Lady of Mercy (Charleston), St. Joseph’s, St. Leo (Chicago), St. Joseph’s (Charleston), Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Charleston); and was pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual help (Camden), St. Joseph’s (Charleston), Our Lady of the Lourdes (Greenwood), Corpus Christi (Lexington), St. Peter’s (Beaufort), St. James, Son of Alpheus (Conway). Msgr. Hamburger retired on July 20, 1991, but continued his priestly ministry until his death on December 18, 2004.
