Scope and Contents
Throughout his tenure as a priest with the Diocese of Charleston, Monsignor Charles H. Rowland has been the recipient of many gifts relevant to the history of the Diocese of Charleston. He has amassed a sizable personal collection of individual, seemingly disparate items. And on occasion he gifts a few items from his personal collection to Diocese of Charleston Archives. The Monsignor Charles H. Rowland Collection consists of those gifts.

Biographical or Historical Information
Born 31 March 1939 in Charleston to Carl J. Rowland and Gertrude Kanapaux, Monsignor Charles Rowland attended Sacred Heart parochial school (1945-1953) and Bishop England High School (1953-1957). Rowland then attended University of South Carolina (1957-1958) and College of Charleston (1958) before joining the United States Air Force (1958-1962) and later entering Seminary at St. Mary, Kentucky, and St. Mary, Baltimore. Bishop Ernest Unterkoefler ordained Father Rowland at Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Charleston) on 16 May 1970.
Circa 1985 Rowland earned a Licentiate of Canon Law (J.C.L.) from Catholic University of America.
Pastoral assignments include the following: Chaplain, Our Lady of Mercy Motherhouse (May Forest, James Island), 1970; Associate pastor for Cathedral, 1970-1975; Pastor, St. Mary of the Annunciation (Charleston), 1975-1982; Pastor, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Charleston), 1982-1985;
Administrative assignments include the following: Assistant to Chancellor, 1970; Associate Chancellor, 1970-1974; Notary and Secretary of the Tribunal, 1970-1975; Diocesan Director of Cemeteries, 1970-1975; Faculty, Bishop England High School, 1970-1974; Acting Chancellor, 1974-1975; Chancellor, 1975-1985; Rural Life; Bishop's Missionary league; Boy Scouts
Rowland was elevated to a Prelate of Honor (Monsignor) on 9 September 1983. He was first a member of Prebyteral Council and College of Consultors in 1984. He served as Vicar General from 1987-circa 1991. He currently serves as Judicial Vicar, a post he's held since circa 1992.
