Biographical or Historical Information

Theresa Prather, of the Secular Franciscan Order, was a graduate student at the University of Dayton, in Ohio.  While applying for her master’s degree, Prather researched the effects of school enrollment in Orangeburg, South Carolina, after students from Christ the King Catholic School were merged with Holy Trinity Catholic School. During her research in June of 2002, Prather travelled to Baltimore, Maryland, and visited the Oblate Sisters of Providence motherhouse to interview Sister Mary Marcella White, O.S.P., and former principal of Holy Trinity Catholic School. She also travelled to Charleston, South Carolina, where she interviewed one of the founders of the Sea of Peace House of Prayer retreat center on Edisto Island, Sister Elizabeth [Betty] Condon, O.P. While in Charleston, Prather visited the Diocese of Charleston archives exhibit, “Black, Catholic, and Proud.”
