Biographical or Historical Information

Lawrence Joseph Shehan, a Roman Catholic cardinal and archbishop emeritus, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1898 to Thomas Patrick Shehan and Anastasia Dames Schofield Shehan.  Shehan attended seminary school at St. Charles College in Catonsville, Maryland, St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, and at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy, where he was ordained a priest in 1922.  In 1945, Shehan was appointed Bishop of Baltimore-Washington and Titular Bishop of Lydda.  In 1953 he was installed as Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and in 1961 he was appointed Archbishop of Baltimore.  In 1965, Archbishop Shehan was elevated to Cardinal.  Cardinal Shehan retired in 1974 and died in 1984.
