Biographical or Historical Information
Bishop Emmet Walsh dedicated a brick building on the campus of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, at 888 King St. Charleston, S.C., as the parochial school in September 1930. Coeducational classes started in 1931 under the instruction of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy (OLM). In later years the Oblate Sisters of Providence and the Sisters of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes assisted the OLMs with instruction. Partly as a result of damage suffered from Hurricane Hugo in 1989, Sacred Heart School closed.
In 1991, the Diocese of Charleston consolidated all parochial schools on the Charleston peninsula and opened Charleston Catholic School in the former Sacred Heart School building.
