Biographical or Historical Information
St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic Church located in Edgefield, South Carolina. The church was designed by Major John R. Niernsie and the foundation and cornerstone were laid in 1858. Money for construction was raised largely by Father Timothy Bermingham. He travelled across the state of South Carolina and abroad to help pay for the debt incurred by the building of the church. In 1860, the church was completed and dedicated by Bishop Patrick Lynch.
